The Education as the Practice of Freedom Project transforms first-year retention at HBCUs through innovative and collaborative educational design thinking. It addresses the unique cultural and socio-psychological challenges HBCU students experience during their first year in college.

Through a mixed-methods approach, we collectively created and implemented curriculum interventions within a first-year seminar program. Key interventions involved fostering a sense of belonging, promoting a growth mindset, and emphasizing the personal and communal value of education.

The outcomes revealed notable enhancements in retention rates and academic performance. The treatment group achieved a 60.1% retention rate and an average GPA of 2.89, significantly surpassing the control group's 43.5% retention rate and 2.57 average GPA. Additionally, we receive over $2.5 million in investments via institutional grants and scholarships.

This project exemplifies the power of stakeholder collaboration and culturally relevant and critical responsive design thinking, providing an innovative model for creating inclusive and accessible solutions that can be scaled and applied in various contexts.
